It's an enduring wish to witness growth at its fastest pace. Growth – reflected not only in mere numbers, but in countless assuring expressions… instilling faith in our endeavors. Faith – a requisite for transcending old paradigms to adopt new ones…thereby enhancing our development activities. Development – a change for the better…an aspiration for us. Aspiration – a force that steers our dreams…steers us to empower…
More than two decades ago, Late Mrs Gita Mittal—wife of Mittal family's patriarch, Mr M L Mittal—took upon the task of focusing her energy on the upliftment of the under-privileged. She believed that poverty was a state where people had no choice and therefore were forced to live in status quo. She initiated the concept of 'One Teacher One School' in villages near Kolkata. Drawn by the phenomenal response to the concept, a consortium of industrialists later adopted the initiative.
Taking inspiration from Mrs Mittal's wish to enable and empower the poor, the Gita Mittal Foundation was formally registered in 1979. The Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation of the Mittal Family, headed by Mr M L Mittal and his three sons—Mr Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, Mr Pramod Mittal and Mr Vinod Mittal. Guided by basic tenets of promoting peace and sustainable development, the Foundation focuses on improving the Human Development Index through initiatives in achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
The Foundation aims at poverty alleviation through empowerment of rural and semi-urban youth by creating capacities, and empowering the youth by facilitating leadership and job oriented skills. It believes that harnessing the untapped potential of this sizable section of the society can bring about the socio-economic transformation in the country.
