Due to lack of medical experts and facilities in rural areas, expecting mothers and new-borns are subject to inadequate care and improper treatment. Nearly 50% to 80% of child births are taken care of by local midwives, called ‘dayis’. They provide antenatal, postnatal and newborn care; advice and treatment on reproductive health, including contraception. They also actively work towards facilitating general primary healthcare in the villages.
Training for midwives has been taken up by the Foundation in order to enable them to carry out medical treatments in a healthy manner. Imparting knowledge of suitable diet and medication for expecting mothers and new-borns is an integral part of the programme. This will substantially reduce the infant and maternal mortality rates.
Currently, the Foundation organises midwife training at its community centre in Rajgarh. By empowering the dayis with requisite know-how, the Foundation aims at providing better medical treatment and inculcating healthy living habits in daily routine of the villagers.
